The Haunting of Volo, H Wallace Gale Died in the Civil War, and then He...

H. Wallace Gale (1842 - 1863) he was 21 years old.

Son of Gardner Gale and Louisa Williams Gale
H. Wallace Gale served as a soldier in the Civil War, and is said to still be walking the grounds around the Volo Antique Mall. Experiences of guests and workers have happened so often, that Discovery Channel’s now ended Ghost Lab had decided to investigate the claims.

As you walk toward the grave of Civil War soldier Wallace H. Gale at the Volo Cemetery, you just may feel a burst of cold wind.
Wallace Gale it is said haunts the Volo Antique Mall, which is right next to the Volo Cemetery.
The building that houses the mall is owned by the Grams family and once was a dairy barn built in 1848 by the Gale family. Wallace Gale, who grew up on the property in an old farmhouse next door to the barn, starved to death in Tennessee while serving in the Civil War.
His body was returned to the homestead for burial, and you can see the tombstone from a window in the antique mall.

Over the years, mall visitors have reported seeing a young boy staring at them from outside the window on the fourth floor. Others claim to have seen perfume bottles floating in the air, and images of a soldier.
The family, employees and visitors to the mall kept their allegedly haunted grounds a bit of a secret, until the Discovery Channel — which hosted the now-canceled television show "Ghost Lab" — learned about it.

According to the show, a shadowy figure was captured on film sitting on some furniture inside the mall. The shadowy figure, some say, was the ghost of Wallace H. Gale.
Televised in November 2009, the show prompted more guests, workers and the family to come forward with more ghost stories and, since then, mall visitors have sent in photos and stories about creepy experiences, mostly at the mall or the grounds nearby, including stories of white dogs walking through mirrors, dolls found in strange places and a boy peering through the fourth-floor window — from the outside.

What happened to the Frog Boys of Mount Waryong, A Unsolved Mystery

We have a strange, sad, and unsolved true mystery for you today. It is a mystery about 5 boys, and what happened to them. They are known as the Frog Boys.

The story begins when boys decided to spend the day catching frogs in the streams of Mount Waryong, South Korea, on March 26, 1991. It was a national holiday so they didn’t have to go to school. They never returned to their homes. Their remains were found 11 years later in September of 2002.
A massive manhunt followed after the boys didn’t come home. National newscasts kept the country up to date. Volunteers joined police to help try and find the boys. Over 8 million flyers were distributed all over the country, and a reward of 42 million won ($35,000) was promised to anybody who could locate the boys. Some of the Frog Boys’ parents became so determined to find their sons that they quit their jobs so they could devote all of their time to searching.

Authorities received over 550 false leads, and at one point, a man called the police and lied that he abducted the Frog Boys. “I have kidnapped the boys for an exchange of ransom, and they’re dying of malnutrition,” he said in one of the phone calls.
The area where they were said to go, Mount Waryong, was searched many times, and yet it is exactly there, that they were found. The children were found in an area they knew well. They were only 3.5 kilometers away from their homes.
The case went nowhere until September 26, 2002, when a man looking for acorns in Mount Waryong found scattered pieces of children’s shoes and clothing. He called the police, and after they searched the mountainside, found all five bodies of the Frog Boys in a shallow pit. At first, the police suspected that the boys had froze to death. It was cold and rainy the day they went missing, and the boys might have gotten lost. The fact that their bodies were so close together might have been because they tried huddling for warmth.

Though it cannot be proved that the boys were murdered exactly where they were found. It cannot be prove that their remains were not hidden somewhere else first. It cannot even be proved that they were all killed at once in one violent session, or that they were killed one by one over a period of time. The number of people involved is unknown.
They were found in a huddling position. Maybe to mislead police? The huddling position did make them think at first that the boys got lost and died together of hypothermia.
The five boys were laid to rest on March 25, 2004. Their families donated their skulls to medical science for research and maybe too in hopes to find out more about the trauma to their children’s skulls.

Experts found two bullet holes in one child’s skull. Three of the five skulls had blunt-force trauma. It is possible that they were hit unconscious with an object like a tool. What kind of object/tool, who wielded it, and why, that is the mystery.
“The three skulls were caved in and showed a number of sharp cracks and holes, the investigators said.”
Police found a 5cm long loaded shell and two 1cm long empty shells near the scene. They sent them to a lab to find out if they are related to this case.

Some questioned why the boys had taken off their clothes. It is very hard to have a definitive answer as to whether the boys willingly undressed themselves or whether they were forced to. No further developments have taken place since the boys autopsy in 2002.
According to then-South Korean Law, the statute of limitations expired 15 years after the crime so in 2006, this meant that even if the prosecution found answers they could not bring a suspect to trial. In 2015 however, South Korea removed that obstacle paving the way for further investigations in infamous cold cases.
During the investigation, police followed many leads and tips. Some were obviously false, some reported sightings, and some people even confessed. Police began an investigation into a call made to a daily newspaper a day before the bodies were found. The paper reported that a man said “You will find remains of the five frog boys in Mt. Waryong.” This man gave the location before the remains were found.

Did the boys accidently stumble upon someone who killed them. Meaning, was it random murder? Was it premeditated murder? Where is the person, or persons now? To date we do not know.

Is It Time To Restrict Fireworks To The Professionals Only.

They are dangerous, dirty, smelly, and very noisy. Fireworks are loved, and hated by many, including pets. Has the time come to ban them from the general public everywhere?
The vast majority of the world’s fireworks come from China. And sometimes they explode early, with deadly consequences. Many times they are mishandled by adults and children without an understanding of what could happen.

As firework laws are relaxed in the U.S., injuries are increasing, and in some instances, death. Many adults still allow children to handle them, even though it is not recommended.

According to CNN: "Since 2000, there's been a trend toward relaxing firework restrictions. The latest state to loosen its laws is New York. As of 2015, the state went from an outright ban to legalizing novelty items such as sparklers, party poppers and cone fountains in some counties. Only three states have laws that maintain total prohibition of all consumer fireworks: Delaware, Massachusetts and New Jersey."

BACKGROUND: Changes in US fireworks laws have allowed younger children to purchase fireworks; and allowed individuals to purchase more powerful ones. To date, no study has evaluated the effect these changes have had on medical outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to examine the epidemiology of pediatric fireworks-related burn injuries among a nationally representative sample of the US for the years 2006-2012.

DESIGN/METHODS: We examined inpatient admissions for pediatric (<20 years of age) firework-related burn patients from 2006-2012 using the Nationwide Inpatient Sample; and examined ED admissions using the Nationwide Emergency Department Sample. Both data sources are part of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP). Trajectories over time were evaluated.

RESULTS: A total of 3193 injuries represented an estimated 90,257 firework-related burn injuries treated in the US from 2006 to 2012. A majority of injuries were managed in the ED, 62.9%. The incidence modestly increased over time; increasing from 4.28 per 100,000 population in 2006 to 5.12 per 100,000 population in 2012. However, definitively, the proportion of injuries requiring inpatient admission (28.9% in 2006 to 50.0% in 2012), and mean length of stay (LOS) in the hospital (3.12 days in 2006 to 7.35 days in 2012), significantly increased over time, while the mean age decreased over time (12.1 years old in 2006 to 11.4 years old in 2012).

CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric fireworks-related burn injuries have increased in incidence, apparent severity of injury, the proportion requiring hospitalization and LOS (in the hospital) in a time period of relaxed fireworks laws in the US. Fireworks laws may need to be revisited by policy-makers.

Myers' research used discharge data from inpatient hospitals and emergency departments. His findings were presented at the Pediatrics Academic Societies meeting in Baltimore in May. The research has not been published or peer-reviewed.
"In terms of severity of injuries requiring hospital treatment, we are very concerned about the misuse of fireworks and have seen an increase in injuries among youth..."

The University of Louisville research team measured the number of firework-related injuries for youths aged 20 and under from 2006 to 2012. While the number of minor burns and related injuries (estimated at 90,257) increased only slightly over that time period, the amount of serious injuries requiring hospitalization jumped from 28.9% to 50%. The means that the length of a hospital stay related to a significant firework-related injury also increased, from 3.12 days in 2006 to 7.35 days in 2012.

Fireworks by the numbers:
From 2009-2013, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 18,500 fires caused by fireworks. These fires included 1,300 structure fires, 300 vehicle fires and 16,900 outside and other fires. An estimated two people were killed in these fires.
In 2014, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated an estimated 10,500 people for fireworks related injuries; 51% of those injuries were to the extremities and 38% were to the head. These injury estimates were obtained or derived from the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2014 Fireworks Annual Report by Yongling Tu and Demar Granados.

The risk of fireworks injury is highest for young people ages 5-9, followed by children 10-19.
More than one-quarter (28%) of fires started by fireworks in 2009-2013 were reported on July 4th. Almost half (47%) of the reported fires on the Fourth of July were started by fireworks.

*To minimize risk of injury, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends never allowing young children to play with or ignite fireworks and to always have an adult supervise fireworks activities.

4th of July fireworks linked to spike in pollution:
In addition to the debris that is often left behind following displays, studies have linked fireworks to water contamination, particularly by perchlorate, a chemical used in fireworks to create bright flashes of light. Perchlorate exposure can cause thyroid problems, and is considered a “likely human carcinogen” by the US Environmental Protection Agency. It can also harm wildlife.

This pollution doesn’t have to happen. There are methods of preventing, or at least minimizing, pollution from fireworks. Some cities are already doing this. In San Diego, for example, companies putting on fireworks displays are required to use practices that give maximum protection to the body of water below.
Levels of tiny pollutants are 42% higher on the holiday than on a typical day, one study says:
Fireworks on the Fourth of July dramatically increase air pollution, boosting exposure to potentially dangerous pollutants for millions of onlookers, according to a recent study in the journal Atmospheric Environment.

The level of particulate matter, or small pollutants like dust, dirt and soot present in the air, increased by 42% on average across the U.S. on the Fourth of July, according to the study. Air conditions are at their worst between 9 and to 10 p.m. on the day of the holiday. The researchers, who looked at data from 315 sites across the country, found that ten of the sites met a threshold deemed unsafe by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) when sustained for a prolonged period of time.
“Particles tend to stay suspended in the air for days,” says Schwartz. “They’re going to drift whichever way the winds goes, so it’s not just going to be the people sitting in the park watching the fireworks.”

For years, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration scientists observed sites across the United States on July 4 and 5, to determine hourly concentrations of fine particulate matter.
“These results will help improve air quality predictions, which currently don’t account for fireworks as a source of air pollution,” says Dian Seidel, author of the study and a scientist at the NOAA.
Short and long-term exposure to air pollutants from fireworks can lead to numerous health issues including:
Coughing
Wheezing
Shortness of breath
Asthma
Heart attack
Stroke

The Environmental Protection Agency encourages those who are sensitive to particle pollution to watch the fireworks from a distance.
“We chose the holiday, not to put a damper on celebrations of America’s independence, but because it is the best way to do a nationwide study of the effects of fireworks on air quality,” Seidel says.

Mysterious submarine wreck found in the Chicago river

A submarine was salvaged from the Chicago River in 1915 In November 1915 a diver named William Deneau discovered what he claimed was a lost submarine on the bottom of the Chicago River. It was brought out of the water that December The sub was put on display on State Street in January 1916, then appeared with a carnival in Iowa that spring. An advertisement in the Chicago Examiner indicates the submarine was back in Chicago on exhibit at Riverview in June, 1916.

The following is from an article in the Chicago Examiner when the sub was discovered which appeared on November 24, 1915:
CHICAGO READY FOR WAR? LOOK! Why, There's Been a Submarine in the River for These Fifteen Years "The con man," as Persuadem Lorgan used to say, "can't lie all the time — no matter how hard he tries." For a long time it has been one of the favorite devices of the confidence fraternity in Chicago to lure their victims by the bright promise, "Just let me show you our submarine down by the river." But a confidence man is not always to be blamed for telling the truth. How could he know that the Chicago River actually does contain a submarine?

It was found yesterday, half buried in the mud at the river bottom near the Wells street bridge. A diver, William M. Deneau, laying cables for the Commonwealth Edison Company, was the discoverer. As he groped along the slimy bottom he stubbed his toe. To curse is impracticable when one is at the bottom of a river. So Deneau did the next best thing — he investigated. He felt all around the thing, learning that it was made of steel, that it was shaped something like a Zeppelin, and that its engine was not working. He came up then, to ask questions. "Why didn't somebody tell me I was working in the war zone?" he demanded. "A man ought to get extra pay when he has to run the risk of submarines every time he dives, oughtn't he? It's dangerous. And are there any mines in the river?"

Was an evil looking black-eyed ghost captured on film during a Christmas party?
Two teenage girls say they spotted the demon after taking the picture at a pub. Sophie Killip and Kayleigh Lomas, both 19, had met up for a festive get-together, but they were horrified when the spectre appeared at one of the party tables in the photograph.
In the photo a dark-haired child appears to have marks on her head and wearing old fashioned clothing, and sunken eyes.

Sophie, a student, said: "The table was just one down from us and nobody was sat there so we took a photo of the decorations because they were really nice."
"There was nothing there at the time but when we looked back at the photo we couldn’t believe it."

Stories about strange activities around places like Cannock Chase or Dudley Castle have been around since time immemorial, and sceptics would suggest such locations are tailor-made for a fertile imagination.

It is said that the spirits of Black-eyed children is an urban legend of supposed paranormal creatures that resemble children between the ages of 6 and 16, with pale skin and black eyes, who are reportedly seen hitchhiking or panhandling, or are encountered on doorsteps of residential homes. Tales of black-eyed children have appeared in pop culture since the late 1990s.
